So, I'm Driving Down the Road Last Night...

So, I'm driving down the road last night, Lewis to be exact. My wife and I were heading home about a quarter till ten from the Circle Cinema. We watched Coco Before Chanel. Great Movie. French with subtitles. Kind of a girl flick, but witty, well written and photogenic enough to keep me highly entertained. I give it a 4 out of 5.

Anyway, South down Lewis.

I'm explaining to my wife how it took the 112 South Lewis bus nearly an hour to get from 41st to 51st street on Friday. It wasn't because of the heavy construction. It was because the lights at 51st street were jacked up, and people started trying to circumvent the light failure by detouring through the side streets and then trying to get back on the main streets, which just caused gridlock. It was comical in a rat race road rage sort of way.

While we were on the bus, dispatch had an "open mike" night. The assignment was for any bus driver who was 10 minutes late or more on their route to call in - one at a time - and report where they were, how long it would take to get to a landmark bus stop and why they were late. It went something like this:
"Route 105 North, I'm at 53rd and Peoria. I'm supposed to be at 41st & Peoria at 5:27 (and the the current time is 5:45). I'm stuck in traffic because Peoria is closed at I-44. (I just made this one up, 105 called in, but I can't remember why.)
There were about 10 of these call ins. Our bus called in. There was a light out on Yale somewhere, a water main break up north somewhere, we had a light malfunction on Lewis, there was construction backing up traffic, etc.

Nearly every call in I can remember was a problem with the city infrastructure. My banker bus mate, and a painter bus mate got into a conversation about situations that could happen in a city if there was ever a catastrophic infrastructure failure (not weather related), because from the call ins to dispatch, that's what it sounded like.

You might ask: What does this have to do with my drive home from the Circle Cinema?

This is what it has to do with my drive home from the Circle Cinema:
I was trying to explain to my wife where the bus wason Lewis Friday, when we saw two pedestrians walking faster than the traffic was moving (they beat us to 51st Street), but I couldn't find the place. ALL THE STREET LIGHTS WERE OFF. It was as dark as a country road.
