Pride of the Great Southwest - Booker T. Washington

The School Song, as I remember, goes something like this

Dear Booker T Washington High School
the Pride of the Great Southwest.
You're a symbol of light for many a youth,
by pointing the way to life's best.
You stand as a beacon in Tulsa
by teaching the ideals of truth.
You inspire us with all that is worthy,
and gird us for life's greatest tasks.
Oh God help us ever grow stalwart,
in body, in soul, and in mind.
That the light of Dear Booker T. high school,
May grow brighter, and always shine.

Amidst the current sports ineligibility troubles plaguing one of the best high schools in the nation, I'm happy to see two educators with long ties to Booker T going back. James Furch and Mike Mims, are back at Booker T to assist in the straightening out. I remember both teachers when I attended there nearly 29 years ago, and I was happy to read that they would both be returning. Roots are very important at that school.

There's a kinship at that school that few high schools ever experience, and it lasts a lifetime. I still feel a part of that family.

All Booker T Alumni and current students need to live up to the school's song, and stand as a beacon in Tulsa, inspiring us with all that is worthy. We have an obligation. I am confident that Mr. Furch and Mr. Mims understand that.

Here's an old saying when I was a kid: Cheaters never prosper.
