Here's a map of the City of Tulsa precincts which had more than 200 votes in the September 8, 2009 Republican Mayoral primary, and the candidate who won those precincts.
Here is the data
A few notes:
1. There were 9,634 votes in the data set out of a total 22,192 votes (43% of total).
2. Not plotted were the Mail-in 9720 and In Person 9721 votes, because I don't know how to attribute those to a particular precinct. If I was guessing, I would say these are from the Maple Ridge, Cascia Hall, and Edison High School areas. That is purely speculation.
3. In the 33 precincts with over 200 votes, Bartlett won every one.
4. Only a few of the 33 precincts are in the mythological "money belt," which tends indicate that they did not have as big of an impact on the primary. That area did have an impact in a supporting role, and I'll show you what that map looks like tomorrow.
5. The total win in the 33 precincts was 61% to 28% with all others getting 11%
6. Mr. Medlock doesn't win a precinct until the total votes in a precinct get down to 126 - another 32 precincts away. The total votes in that data set are 5067, of which Mr. Bartlett receives 2867, Medlock and the others receive 2180.
GOOD NEWS
I have to say, I'm having a lot of fun with these data. I really enjoy working with maps and data. Another benefit, is that I get to learn more about the city.
BAD NEWS
The old computer I had my Arcview program is dead, so I've lost the ability to do any GIS. Probably a good thing for some that I no longer have the ability.
Special thanks to the University of Oklahoma Center for Spatial Analysis, for their really fine precinct map.
